About
What is Ultimate?
Ultimate Frisbee, also referred to as Ultimate, is an exciting, non-contact team sport played by thousands the world over. It combines the speed, stamina and agility of sports such as Soccer, Basketball and American Football into an elegantly simple yet fascinating and demanding game. To compete at the top level, Ultimate players require an unmatched degree of speed, stamina and agility.
Yet the simplicity of the rules means it’s easy and fun for newcomers to pick up.
Ultimate is played with two teams of seven on a large rectangular field. The object of the game is to move the Frisbee (plastic disc) up the field by passing the disc from team-mate to team-mate until completing a pass in the opponent’s end-zone. Transitions between offense and defense are quick and constant, occurring whenever the disc is dropped, intercepted, passed out of bounds, or held by the player for more than ten seconds.
Unlike many other sports, Ultimate is played without traditional referees; instead, the players themselves mediate the game. This mode of self-refereeing upholds the governing “Spirit of the Game” philosophy of Ultimate as the sport places the responsibility for fair play directly on the players. The “Spirit of the Game” philosophy instills Ultimate with a unique spirit of sportsmanship that encourages a tradition of mutual respect and unity among all players – both on and off the field. In line with the “Spirit of the Game”, all Ultimate players believe that they should win because of superior speed, skill and stamina, and not because they could cheat, sledge or bully their opponents.
And the best part is that it works. Beautifully..
About Chennai Ultimate Frisbee
Chennai Ultimate Frisbee was started by Narayanan Krishnan, Shankar Balakrishnan, and Manu Karan on June 9th, 2007 at the Besant Nagar Beach. Manu had been playing Ultimate from 2004 which he picked up while living in Boulder, Colorado. Narayanan (a.k.a Mama) and Shankar started playing Ultimate with Manu along with a few others in their one year study at the Indian School of Business in late 2006. After their stint at ISB, they wanted to continue playing Ultimate and hence grabbed a few friends and headed out to the beach one fine June morning. And so was born the Chennai Ultimate Frisbee club. Today, all 3 of them remain ardent fans of the game and believe that Ultimate is the way to supreme fitness and character.
The club has grown by word of mouth since then, and on it’s first anniversary, CUF has about 95 people on it’s mailing list with about 30-40 people playing regularly. The number of days of play has gone up from 1 day in a week, to 4 days in a week!.
The club is open to anyone who wants to play Ultimate and does not cost you anything. Just join the yahoo groups or directly land up at one of the games!
